Described as one of England’s best kept secrets by former guests, the Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel made the headlines in October 2019 as it closed its doors for the final time after a previous potential sale fell through and no other buyer could be found.

LSH has since been instructed as joint agents alongside Pennine Ways to secure the sale of the Georgian-constructed property, which comprises a 15-bedroom hotel, as well as four bedroom bungalows and two holiday cottages. It is accessible from both the M6 and A69 motorways.

The property presents a significant opportunity for redevelopment following the rise in demand for ‘staycations’ as a result of COVID-19. Eden District Council granted planning permission in January 2018 for the conversion of the existing hotel, holiday lets, and owner’s accommodation to provide 38 holiday let facilities. This comprises of 22 holiday lets, 12 new build holidays lets, and the demolition of existing outbuildings to allow room for four further new build holiday lets. A new leisure and catering facility, additional new park and new access facilities were also included in the new permission.

Lucy Garner-Currie, Senior Surveyor at LSH, commented:

“The appointment to sell this asset, which has been such an integral part of the local economy for many years, is a very exciting opportunity. The property boasts huge redevelopment potential to restore its reputation as a prestigious venue and UK holiday destination and we look forward to helping make that happen.”
