Our Leeds-based Transport Consultancy team has been instructed to let 14 retail and catering units as part of the £8.6m redevelopment of Newcastle Central station.
Managed by East Coast, the station is undergoing a huge transformation that includes improvements to the retail and leisure offering, increased cycle storage facilities and better public and passenger facilities.
LSH is marketing 14 units ranging from 14 sq m to 90 sq m. Units one to seven have been earmarked for food and drink provision, while units eight to 13 are suitable for retail use. Unit 14, the largest space, which is split between the ground and first floor, has been designed as a pub restaurant for which an operator is being sought.
Jonathan Henley, Surveyor in LSH’s Transport Consultancy team said: “The redevelopment of Newcastle Central Station is very important for the city as it will provide a welcoming and distinctive gateway. Units 11 to 14 will be ready to occupy this autumn and the remainder will be completed in Spring2014. We have worked with East Coast for several years across their property portfolios and are really looking forward to seeing the transformed station.”
The Grade-One listed station is used my more than 12 million train and Metro passengers every year. Newcastle Central is a key station for the North East and on the national rail network, with 67 East Coast trains serving the station each week-day.
East Coast Property & Projects Director Tim Hedley-Jones said: “Our customers want a good range of retail and food choices, so we look forward to welcoming new businesses to Central station. With more than 12 million passengers at the station every year, the new retail and leisure units offer excellent commercial opportunities.”
Work is currently underway to create the new public space in the station’s portico. Whilst this work takes place passengers will be able to access the station through covered walkways in the portico. The contractor on the scheme is Millers and the architect is Ryder.
